The medicine works by preventing the rise of oestrogen hormone levels in the body. After ovulation is achieved the oestrogen levels start rising and thus stimulate the hypothalamus in the brain which sends the messages to the pituitary gland. As a result, the pituitary gland stops the production of hormones responsible for ovulation called follicle stimulating hormone and luteinising hormone. The follicle stimulating hormone stimulates the ovaries whereas luteinising hormone causes ovulation.
