Pfizer manufactures this drug. The medicine is an antifungal drug used for the treatment of various fungal infections in the body. It contains fluconazole as the chief ingredient. It belongs to triazole antifungal group of medicines. The medicine is available in form of capsules, infusion and also in form of suspensions and all of these forms contains fluconazole as the active ingredient.
What is the mechanism of action of this drug?
Fluconazole acts on the fungal infections by interfering with the cell membrane of fungus. The fungi produce a substance called and ergosterol. This substance is essential for the survival of fungus cells. When ergosterol is not manufactured by the fungal cells due to the interference caused by fluconazole, the fungal cells can proliferate and the contents which are vital for the survival of fungi leak out of the cells and thus the fungus gets killed.
Fluconazole is used for treatment of different types of fungal and yeast infections specifically caused by Candida fungus.
Indications of fluconazole
the blood can be used for the treatment of various fungal skin infections like athletes foot, pityriasis versicolor, Candida skin infections, infections of the mouth, urinary tract, throat and lungs it is also indicated for the treatment of infections caused by Candida in the organs like heart, abdomen, infections of the bloodstream which is very widespread and clinically it is known as systemic candidiasis.
The medicine is also indicated for the treatment of inflammation of vagina caused by the fungal infection, inflammation of the penis the foreskin, treatment of fungal infections in patients with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, and in patients with weak immune system undergoing radiotherapy, chemotherapy or bone marrow transplantation.
What other contraindications of this medicine?
This drug should not be used in cases in which the patient has severe kidney and lung disorders, patients with severe heart diseases, in cases where an arrhythmia or disturbed heart rhythm is present, in pregnant women and mothers nursing their children, and in patients that are allergic to antifungal medicines like ketoconazole.
Side effects of this medicine
Like every other medicine there are some side effects that can occur in case of fluconazole as well. The side-effects that can occur in case of this antifungal drugs are abdominal pain, headache, hypokalaemia, dizziness, skin rashes, diarrhoea, flatulence, rash, liver disorders, seizures, high cholesterol of blood, loss of hair, decrease in the number of white blood cells or WBC, indigestion, nausea and pain in abdomen.
The drug interactions of fluconazole
The medicine cannot be combined with drugs like cisapride and terfenadine. Antibiotic rifampicin which is used in case of tuberculosis can reduce the blood levels of this medicine and therefore your Doctor may need to prescribe more dosage than normal. The anti-blood clotting properties of warfarin can increase by the use of this medicine. The drug can increase the blood levels of medicines like cyclosporine, theophylline, zidovudine, rifabutin etc.
