How this drug will work?
Furosemide has special action in the body. This belongs to diuretics class of medicines and this type of diuretic is sometimes known as water tablets. This medicine works by increasing the urinary output from the body. This medicine works by increasing the excretion of salts like sodium and potassium from the loop of Henle in the kidneys. Hence, the name is loop diuretics.
When these salts are excreted from the kidneys into the urine the water is also drawn alongside and thus fluid retention is reduced.
The drug is used for the treatment of excessive fluid retention called oedema. In cases of heart failure, pulmonary oedema the blood cannot circulate properly and accumulates in the ankles and lungs. As a result, excessive fluid will start flowing into the blood vessels and increases the pressure. Removing this excessive fluid reduces the pressure and helps heart to pump the blood in the body. The drug is also indicated in cases of fluid accumulation caused by cirrhosis of liver. In this case fluid may accumulate in the abdomen or in the legs.

What are the contraindications for the use of this drug?
Some contraindications can occur when prescribing this medicine. Do not use medicine in case of women and children under 18 years of age. One must avoid this drug in case of unstable angina, hypotension, hypertension, kidney failure, patients taking nitrate medication, in cases of heart attack, stroke and heart failure. Patients with an eye disorder called NAION also cannot take this medicine. The tablet of this medicine contains galactose, hence patients with rare hereditary disorder called galactose intolerance cannot use this medicine.
What are the side effects?
There can be some side-effects of this medicine. The side effects include low level of sodium, potassium and magnesium salts in the blood, low blood pressure, headache, weakness, dizziness, diarrhoea, vomiting, kidney problems, high uric acid, raised blood glucose level, skin rashes, photo sensitivity and dehydration.
How this drug interacts with other medicines?
The medicine can cause severely low blood pressure so that the person can feel dizzy when combined with other blood pressure lowering drugs like antihypertensive drugs like Alpha blockers, beta-blocker and calcium channel blocker. Side effects of this medicine on kidneys can increase with medicines like gentamicin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and some other diuretics. The medicine is like indometacin and phenytoin can lower the effects of furosemide. There is a increase the risk of low blood potassium level when this medicine is consumed along with corticosteroids.
