Mechanism of the action of drug

The finasteride belongs to special category of drugs called 5 alpha reductase inhibitor. As the name suggests, the medicine will work by inhibiting the work of enzyme in the body called 5 alpha reductase. The enzyme is responsible for conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone which is the byproduct of testosterone metabolism and the chemical compound responsible for damage to the hair follicles and hair loss in men.

Men who are sensibly action of DHT can take finasteride in the doses prescribed by your doctor. The finasteride will stop the action of dihydrotestosterone by inhibiting the 5 alpha reductase. What are the side effects of use of finasteride?

Possible side effects of this medicine include impotence in men, changes in breast like formation of lumps, tenderness, and swelling. There can be reduced volume of ejaculation, premature ejaculation and loss of libido.


Drug interactions

Do not take this medicine if you are taking another drug for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia which also contains finasteride.
