Albuterol (salbutamol) 2/4mg

This medicine contains albuterol which functions as a bronchodilator to relax muscles of the respiratory tract and improve the air flow to the lungs. This medicine is used in patients with reversible obstructive pulmonary diseases. The drug can treat the bronchospasm is which may occur on account of respiratory disease or it is induced by exercises. The drug may also be used for other purposes not listed in this article.

Mechanism of action

This medicine is a bronchodilator and it relaxes the pulmonary muscles so that your flow can increase and person suffering from bronchospasm can breathe properly.


Precautions before using this drug

Be sure you have told your Doctor that you suffer from any heart condition, cardiovascular disorder like high blood pressure, history of congestive heart failure, rhythm disorders of heart, epilepsy, diabetes and in cases of overtired hormone this drug must be used carefully and under medical supervision only.

Do not use this drug if you are allergic to this medicine.

What are the indications for use?

The drug is indicated in 2 cases

  • in reversible obstructive airway disease like asthma
  • Exercise induced bronchospasm of pulmonary muscles.


Instructions in pregnancy and breastfeeding

This drug can be used in cases of pregnant women and mothers feeding their newborn babies. The drug may harm the unborn fetus or the newborn baby.


What are the possible side effects after using this medicine?

There can be some serious and less serious side effects of this medicine. The common side effects include headache, dizziness, diarrhoea, muscular pain, dryness of mouth, nausea and vomiting, insomnia, sore throat and nasal congestion.

The uncommon side effects of serious side effects include wheezing, tightness in chest, difficulty breathing, paining chest, palpitations, anxiety, nervousness and tremors. There can be rhythm disorders of heart, extreme thirst, increased urination, discomfort and legs and muscular weakness on account of hypokalaemia. The blood pressure may become severely high which can cause severe headache, blurred vision, tinnitus, seizures.


How this medicine will interact with other drugs?

Use albuterol carefully if you are using diuretic tablets, digitalis, and other group of bronchodilators like levalbuterol, salmeterol, isoproterenol and terbutaline.

Use this medicine carefully with MAOI drugs which includes furazolidone, rasagiline and phenelzine. Tell your doctor if you are taking any other group of antidepressant drugs like amitriptyline. Combine this medicine carefully with beta-blocker drugs like metoprolol, atenolol and sotalol.
